Spice oil

JA: スパイスオイル(すぱいすおいる)

Spice oil is an oil infused with spices to enhance flavor.

What it means in a kitchen

In a working kitchen, spice oil is created by heating oil, typically around 60-80°C, with various spices for about 10-15 minutes. This technique extracts essential oils and flavors from the spices, which can then be used in dressings, marinades, or as a finishing oil.

Common misunderstanding

Beginners often underestimate the importance of temperature control, leading to burnt spices that can impart bitterness. Additionally, they may use too many spices, overwhelming the oil's flavor.

Example

For a simple garlic-infused spice oil, heat olive oil with crushed garlic cloves at 70°C for 10 minutes before straining.
